random vid rec (SPN)

Sammifer
I don't ship Teh Wincest,* but it says something that this show is summed up pretty perfectly by what is, basically, the Domestic Violence Song.

*Though, now that I've finally seen this show? Yeah, it might be Not My Kink, but it's not crazy. Remind me to do meta on how they collapse all relationships into the one they have with each other. Or, at least, keep trying to, over and over and over again.

Y'know, people have been talking to me for years about this show and I've never seen past the pilot years ago. Someday, I should probably watch it, but I admit I'm a little afraid I'll get sucked down the rabbit hole.

Well, if I'm trying to convert you, this would be a better one to try on:

Honestly, though, while I've come to love it, SPN is piled high with Issues. If you do watch it, be sure to bring popcorn to throw at the screen. Also, a pillow with which to stifle your laughter when the angst goes over the top. Which it will. Every episode.

Still, it has Misha Collins and grave desecration and rather good plot and gratuitous violence and an awesome car and angels who are dicks. So, you know, upsides.

Great vid rec!

I have a love/hate relationship with this song. Works perfectly for the two of them, though.

I have a weird relationship with songs, period: I'll watch and enjoy vids set to all kinds of songs I otherwise don't care for at all, provided they're put together well.

I do keep trying to work out exactly how I feel about the song as an artifact representing DV. On the whole, it doesn't bother me the way I suspect it possibly should. I don't see the glorification, basically, but far too easily can see how someone young and impressionable might hear "passion" louder than "dysfunction."

Exactly.

The song itself is beautiful, and Rianna's voice is enjoyable, and even the lyrics have their moments. I don't know. I think I just have an automatic distaste for Eminem, and combining that with huge distaste for DV = an awful lot of distaste.

Though, I do have the 'part 2' version of this song and I love it. There's a pleasant lack of forcibly tying women to beds and burning them alive over childish entitlement bullshit. Which is nice. The lack, that is.

O_O I didn't realize that the music for the vid had been cut until I Googled the lyrics just now. Okay, yeah, my desire to listen to the song in my off hours did just lessen somewhat.

O_O

Lol, I love your reaction!

And it makes a big difference, right? Dysfunctional relationships are one thing, and that I don't mind, but the burning? Yeah, no. And his whole [ahem, loosely paraphrased] "oh, I beat her but I feel real bad about it :'(" is not winning me over. -.-

I think there are like 3 different versions of this song floating around now? Check out the part 2 version, so so much better. I can listen to that without feeling any homicidal urges toward the guy.

Am I not supposed to experience homicidal urges toward him? It read to me more like an empty apology that should be instantly recognizable as empty… but possibly it's much less clear if you haven't seen it all before and then parsed it academically for good measure. Hmm. Anyway, yeah, it's the burning, specifically. Kerosine has a distinctive smell that sticks with you.

You're right, Part 2 is a lot more listenable, though I miss the fast beat. I'd actually never heard Rihanna before; she has a lovely voice, lovely enough that it's a pity it's so highly processed on most of these songs. I've never bothered to listen to any other Eminem, either, though I've heard of him, so that might help with the not-bothering-to-want-to-punch-him.
